First Quarter: Narratives
The Quarter Layout Overview
Big Question: How do narrative texts help students understand themselves and others on a deeper level?
During first quarter, students will read a variety of short narrative texts (e.g., short stories, poetry, novel excerpts, etc.). Students will: practice close reading of texts, write about their reading, and participate in text-based collaborative discussions. In addition, students will determine themes and analyze their developments, practice writing objective summaries, and learn how to analyze points of view of different characters with the goal of understanding themselves and others on a deeper level. Students will ultimately apply their understanding of narrative craft and structure to their own writing at the end of the quarter.
